Joseph Barkiewicz, 85, of Mayo, Fla., passed away Saturday, May 26, 2012 in Shands Hospital at the University of Florida following an extended illness. Mr. Barkiewicz was born in Royal Oak, Michigan on June 6, 1926 to the late Anthony Barkiewicz, and the late former, Rose Kurtz. He has been a resident of Mayo since 1990 after moving from Wakulla County, Fla.

He was a veteran of the US Navy and served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in WWII. He was an electrician by trade and retired from the Florida Power Corporation after 32 years of service. He was of the Episcopal Faith and in his spare time enjoyed Ham radio operating, working on computers, and pencil and pen artwork.

He is survived by, his wife of 43 years, Peggy Lonell Barkiewicz, two daughters, Mary Jo Story, and husband Jack, and Laurice Simons, two sons, Michael Barkiewicz, and wife Karen, and Clay Shuemake, and wife Patty. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Edna Hines eight grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday June 2, 2012 in Pleasant Grove Cemetery with Father Aquilla Hanson officiating. All arrangements are under the care of Joe P. Burns Funeral Home of Mayo.
