Larry Gene Wright, 86, of Salisbury, NC, died on Monday, May 18, 2026, at The Drake Memory Care in Concord, NC.

Born March 23, 1940 in Landis, NC, he was the son of the late Carl Sylvester Wright and Juanita Abernathy Wright.

Larry was a graduate of Cleveland High School, received an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University, and also held a master’s in engineering from the University of Maryland.

He served as a U.S. Army officer stationed at Ft. Huachuca in Arizona.

He enjoyed camping & hiking, and through the years, completed more than 500 miles of the Appalachian Trail and made dozens of trips to his favorite local spot, South Mountains State Park. He was an amateur radio enthusiast N4QY and long-time member of the Rowan County Amateur Radio Society.

He was a Wolfpack sports fan, and even as his memory faded, he enjoyed playing chess with his grandsons.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Philip Ray Wright; his brother, Carl Steve Wright; his sister, Joyce Ann Wright; as well as his stepmother, Alice Elizabeth Wright and his stepbrothers, Jerry and Tony Sims. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Hazel Regina Wright; daughter, Cheryl (Wright) Johnson; daughter, Kimberly (Wright) Quantz (Daniel); son, Jonathan Wright (Jill); grandsons, Elias & Micah Johnson, as well as Anderson & Nathan Wright; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 1pm at New Hope Baptist Church in Salisbury, NC (830 Choate Road.) A reception will take place at New Hope following the service.

In addition to the compassionate care offered by extended family, the family would like to express its gratitude for so many that provided support including staff at Trinity Living Center, Tenderhearted Home Care, The Drake Memory Care, & Atrium Hospice.
