Gillie (Gil) R. Downing, Jr., 90, Salisbury, formerly of Accomac County, VA passed away peacefully Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Genesis of Salisbury.

He was the son of the late Gillie Downing and Alice Hickman Downing. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Merchant Marines. Later he worked as a bus driver with Trailways, and for most of his working years was employed by, and retired from Preston Trucking.

Together with his wife, they traveled extensively as members of the Good Sams Club and Thousand Trails. They made lifelong friends all across the country. He enjoyed being an amateur Ham radio operator. He owned and piloted private airplanes and remote model airplanes. He also enjoyed competitive sailing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Faye Carroll Downing, brother, Norman Downing, sister, Lucille Killmon, and son William Dale Brubaker. He is survived by their daughter Gwen Shedaker and her husband Phil of Laurel, DE, son, David Downing and his wife, Phyllis of Laurel, DE, and daughter Debbie Culver and her husband Rick of Felton, DE, a sister, Linda Josselyn of NJ, 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Norma Minner Rooks and Diane Wagner.

At his request, his body was donated to Maryland Anatomy Board for Science Research. There will be a visitation at the home of his son, 35811 Traci Drive, Laurel, DE on Sunday, May 21, from 2-4 pm.
