William (Bill) Major, 73, of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday October 17th, 2017 in Sherrills Ford.

Bill was born in Washington D.C. to Rodman and Freda (Wahl) Major on February 2, 1944. He attended Binghamton Central High School, Binghamton, NY. He married the love of his life, Nancy (Vanderburg) Major on April 26th, 1969 in Binghamton, NY. He worked in the mechanical trades for a better part of his career. Bill worked at Xerox, Frito Lay, South Central Scaffolding, and several construction equipment suppliers in the Piedmont Region of North Carolina.

He was most proud to have served his country in the United States Army from 1964-1968 being stationed in Ft. Gordon GA, Ft. Monmuth, NJ and Ft. Hood, TX before serving for a year in Vietnam. Bill was very passionate about being a steward to the community he lived in.

He served as assistant scout master for the Boy Scouts of America in Syracuse, NY for several years. He was also a volunteer with the United Fire Company in Montrose, PA and also served serval terms as a councilman for the borough of Montrose, PA.

One of his favorite activities was serving as constable for the borough of Montrose, especially on Election Day. Bill served on the Board of Directors for Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire Company and was part of the Board of Directors that built the current fire station. Bill later became very passionate serving on the board of Richard’s Coffee Shop and Museum in Mooresville, NC, which honors past and present service members of our United States Military. Bill also was a member of American Legion Post 103 in Mooresville, NC.

Bill had many hobbies from woodcarving to RV’ing. He was most passionate as an amateur radio operator (KI40CN) and enjoyed many hours leading the “Net’s” and talking to people around the world. He was also a lifelong racing enthusiast. If there was a race on the dirt or pavement Bill was watching. Bill and Nancy also enjoyed many years of camping together along with their many friends.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Nancy of 48 years. He is also survived by his daughter Kelly and son-in-law Alton Johnson, Mount Joy, PA, son Randy Major, Mountville, PA, grandson, Carter Johnson, Mount Joy, PA, sister & brother-in-law Marlene & Robert Ross of Denver, NC, Nephew, Jeff Ross and his wife Christy, Mooresville, NC, niece, Kimberly Ross, Albany, NY, & Father-In-Law, John Vanderburg, Endicott, NY and faithful 4 legged companion, Lucy. Bill is also survived by many dear friends in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and many ham radio operators across the country.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 21st from 1:00-3:00 PM with a service following at 3:00 PM at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home Chapel with Leo Fahey, Chaplain officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to American Cancer Society or Richard’s Coffee Shop, 165 North Main Street, Mooresville, NC 28115.

The family of Bill wishes to extend our special thank you to the Oncology Unit at the Salisbury VA and to Dr. Desnoyes and Amy Franklin.
