Jarvis McDonald Hearn Sr., a native of Isle of Wight County, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008. He celebrated his 100th birthday on March 19, 2008.

Mr. Hearn was the son of the late W. Hearn and Eva Carter Hearn of Smithfield. He was a member of the Ivy Memorial Baptist Church of Hampton. Mr. Hearn was an avid amateur radio operator and for more than 58 years enjoyed talking to "Ham" radio operators all around the world. He was also part of the early Emergency Communications Services of the Hampton area.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Frances Hines Hearn; a son, Ronald A. Hearn of Hampton.

Mr. Hearn is survived by his son, the Rev. Dr. Jarvis M. Hearn Jr. and his wife, Karla, of Smithfield; three grandchildren, J. Mark Hearn of Carrollton, Dana A. Hearn of Fredericksburg and Lisa Adkins of Gloucester; great-grandson, Josh Divine of Gloucester; and a daughter-in-law, Joanne Hearn Foley and her husband, Charles, of Yorktown.
